About us

Founded in 2015, ZiMwana Worldwide is a Zimbabwean, non-governmental, humanitarian organization committed to change lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged children, especially girls, through interventions that focus more on empowering and rehabilitation programs. We work in the country’s poorest areas such as peri - urban and rural communities.

Poverty and discrimination drive and blights the lives of so many young girls and boys inhibiting the growth and prosperity of the wider community and country.

Our programming focuses on ending child marriages, sexual exploitation such as rape and domestic violence, ending drug and alcohol abuse, rehabilitating through education, access to health, life skills, sports and arts. The aim is to develop a better and independent future for orphans and vulnerable children and their families.

Education is our key rehabilitation tool through formal enrollment, non formal education and life skills training. Our life skills training focuses on utilizing each individual’s God given talents; emphazing on using one’s hands. Children are trained in music, arts, sculpture, sewing, hair making among other trades that they can make a living out of and be able to move away from poverty. Having a sustainable approach where youths (especially women) are empowered from the resources already available to them in the communities, make a long lasting difference to improving livelihoods.

We work with children up to 21 years of age and girls are the biggest beneficiaries. Our overall goal is to empower poor and vulnerable children to attain their rights through high quality, participatory programs, the benefits of which will continue and multiply without on-going support from ZiMwana Worldwide.

We work in the following communities: Mabvuku /Tafara - Harare East, Caledonia – Goromonzi, Bikita - Masvingo, Vungu - Gweru and Binga – Matabeleland North.

ZiMwana Worldwide is there to stand in the gap and complement the government in up-lifting lives of orphans and vulnerable children, especially in peri-urban and rural areas. In all our programs we thrive as much as possible to involve the government through the local leadership and various arms of government. All children belong to the state; therefore it’s important to partner the government and provide first hand children’s challenges.

The organization was formed in view of the rising levels of challenges young girls are facing in newly established settlements, rural areas and peri –urban areas of major cities. These areas lack basic infrastructure such schools, roads, clinics, sewer, social services, electricity, recreational facilities among other services. Majority of inhabitants are not employed, high HIV and AIDS pandemic effects, school dropouts, child headed households, child marriages, drug and alcohol abuse, teen pregnancies and denial of children’s rights in cases of inheritance. Child abuses in all forms are prevalent and the children need support as the settlements are being modernized.

We are there to bridge the gap in the ever changing world. As the youths are growing they should not be left behind because they are orphans or vulnerable but be part and parcel to the future development of Zimbabwe, through harnessing their God given talents.

Our Vision

To have communities where orphans, vulnerable children and caregivers are able to fully access all the basic necessities that will help them personally develop, participate in and contribute to sustainable community development.

Our Mission

Our Passion

1. Education

Children represent the future of a country. They represent hope, new dawn and are a promise for a better day. When children are exposed to abuse, child marriages, hunger, poverty, crisis they cease to be children and they become adults but still in a child’s stage. Empowering these children with education will help in reintegrating them to their duties as children, empowering them to make their own decisions and pursue dreams. ZiMwana Worldwide’s education goal is to rehabilitate out of school children, school dropouts through access to safe, quality and inclusive education.

No-matter the circumstances, Education is a right for ALL children. It is non–negotiable and it is one of our key programs as an organization. 70% of our programs revolve around enhancing access and provision of quality education.

Peri urban settlements face serious challenges to accessing education with high number of out of school children and school dropouts, due to lack of schools with an estimated of over 100 000 not going to school.

Our priority is giving girls and the disabled equal opportunities in accessing education. Empowering girls with education has led to an end in child marriages, reduction in teen pregnancies and empowered communities. We advocate for free education for all children especially the primary level (grade 0-7).

We employ an inclusive approach involving a lot of stakeholders from, children, families, community stakeholders, local and national government, local and international organizations in advocating for children to get education.

2. Ending Child Marriages

A CHILD is a person under the age of 18.

CHILD MARRIAGE refers to a civil, traditional, religious or informal union where either the bride or groom, or both, are under the age of 18.

Child marriage is a violation and abuse of children’s rights under the Zimbabwean laws, ACRWC (African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child), CRC (Convention on the Rights of Children) and other international and regional human rights instruments.

The government has a duty to enforce human rights in the country. Child marriages in communities are now rampant fueled by poverty, gender discrimination, teen pregnancy, socio-cultural norms and traditions. Our role is to intervene and end child marriage and its attendant consequences.

We utilize community dialog structures such as churches, elected government officials (councilors, MPs, DAs), youth groups, traditional leaders, schools and other organizations to stop the spread of child marriages.

How we do it:

2.1 - Education

Our number one rehabilitation tool is education.

Girls married off at a young age, are more likely to drop out of school and more likely to live in abject poverty. We rehabilitate out of school children back to school through programs that enable them to stay longer in school and limit child marriages.

Such programs include:

  • Paying their school fees, uniforms, textbooks and stationery.
  • In school feeding schemes to improve nutrition, class participation and school attendance
  • Menstrual hygiene management for school children, so that girls do not miss school during their menses
  • Making schools safe places for learning, free from, sexual abuse, and violence / bullying.
  • Enabling proper documentation of children in schools (birth certificates)
  • School social clubs
  • Encouraging married children and teenage mothers to return to school or providing them second chance educational opportunities through life skills training.
  • Engaging male mentors and champions in the community to advocate for girls’ educational rights and campaign against child marriage

2.2 - Advocacy on Law Reforms and Community Engagements

Child marriages happen in communities we reside, in families and people we know. Engaging the community of boys, girls, parents, traditional leaders, religious leaders, government officers and other groups to conduct education and sensitization forums to illustrate the ills of child marriage.

Advocacy for reform and harmonization of conflicting laws centered on marriage.

How we do it:

  • Helping the community to understand that child marriage is not solution to poverty alleviation. Helping them to develop activities that generate income, through trainings and seed capitals.
  • Empowering girls to know their rights through education, social clubs, mentoring and sports
  • Encouraging parents to treat boys and girls equally and emphasizing the role they have to play in instilling values that reject child marriage
  • Community dialog meetings

3. SRHR (SEXUAL REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND RIGHTS) & Menstrual Hygiene

One of the most important health issues affecting girls and women is menstrual hygiene. Every month a girl/woman goes through her menstrual cycle; whether you are rich or poor menstruation is a natural occurrence making accessing hygiene methods critical to safe health especially for the vulnerable and disadvantaged girls. The emergence of a lot of diseases linked to use of unhygienic methods such as cervical cancers, pains etc, makes it a serious cause for concern.

Combating cultural beliefs and taboos around menstrual hygiene has helped improve access to safe and hygiene methods. ZiMwana has embarked on a number of strategies to raise awareness on the plight vulnerable girls are facing during their menses and fund-raising for the proper and safe sanitary wear to use.

To date we have raised and distributed sanitary pads to over 10 000 disadvantaged girls and young women across Zimbabwe with over 6 months supply per individual. During the distribution girls are taught on the importance of using safe methods against use of old cloth, cow dung, newspapers and demystifying myths around menstruation.

Re-Usable Sanitary Pads

Re-usable sanitary pads can be used, washed and dried in the sunlight for re-use. With proper use of re-usable pads it can last over 2 years. Re-usable sanitary pads are a sustainable and less costly method of providing a safe method during menses.

We have embarked on the project to make re-usable pads as an income generating project for different communities.

During distribution of pads we also include SRHR (Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights), advocacy on children rights, women empowerment, HIV and Aids testing and counseling. We advocate for good health and well being for children and an inclusive approach to health issues affecting girls and women.

How we do it:

  • Using sport to bring girls and boys together and utilizing it to provide services such as HIV/AIDS testing, counseling, health talks.
  • Creation of school and community social clubs with focus on awareness, sexual and reproductive education.
  • Community stakeholder engagement.
  • Advocating for curricular review to include sexual and reproductive health.
  • Provision of free sanitary wear to girls in school.

4. Sports

Goal: Promotion of the right to play and participate in sport for every child.

The IPA Declaration of the Child’s Right to Play and Article 31 of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child state that the child has a right to leisure, play and participation in cultural and artistic activities. The right to play should be enjoyed by every child. ZiMwana believes in affording every child a chance to play.

Access to sports infrastructure in vulnerable communities is very crucial in promoting sports activities amongst vulnerable groups. Lack of infrastructure in vulnerable communities hampers sports development especially in talent identification. Our role is to develop infrastructure, maintaining and availing it for use to community sports clubs. Sports participation improves health, enjoyment, confidence and self-esteem. It is a source of livelihood and empowerment to youths.

ZiMwana Annual Sports

An annual sporting fiesta of ball games is held in Caledonia every year. Children participate in football, netball, volleyball, karate, and chess. There is equal participation of girls and boys in all categories. The sports fiesta draws at least 600 athletes and more than 2 000 spectators over 2 days. The event is held in partnership with the ministry of sports as it dovetails into the vision of the ministry.

We believe in inclusive sports and people living with disability are also incorporated to participate during the games.

The sports fiesta is also a platform for talent identification and an important step of taking youths out of drugs and alcohol abuse

ZiMwana Street Athletics In the communities we work in, there are no proper play grounds. In an endeavor to ensure access to sports we use our streets as sporting platforms. Everyday children play in the streets and we utilize the streets to identify talent, offer the vulnerable children a platform to enjoy sports in an organized way and help them to be integrated in national competitions.

In all our sporting events we work with the Ministry of Sports.

How we do it:

  • Encouraging the right to play for children in schools and marginalized communities;
  • Advocating and lobbying for access to sporting infrastructure for all children regardless of disability;
  • Creation of safe playing centers through the Wakakosha Creative Hub;
  • Sports and cultural infrastructure development and inclusion of traditional games in sporting activities.
Sport is critical in information dissemination especially in tackling society ills, such as child marriage, domestic violence, rape, HIV and Aids, drug and alcohol abuse.

Above all sport unifies and heal communities.

5. Feeding Program

One of the most challenging situations in communities is hunger. Most households have no consistent income or any income generating economic activity. Orphans and vulnerable children are at risk of spending the day without eating anything. The school feeding program guarantees they have at least a meal a day.

We have successfully fed 500+ children with a meal a day. The program has been a huge success as nutrition levels have increased among children. This has seen a change in weight of children at the start of school term and at the end of school term. Increase in class attendance and class participation. The school also becomes a safe and secure zone for children.

Secondary benefits of the feeding program are the following;

  • easy to disseminate information on sexual and reproductive health, children’s rights and the school now grow its own food for consumption and resale.

How we do it:

  • In-school feeding schemes to improve nutrition, class participation and school attendance.
  • Community stakeholder engagement teams.
  • Community dialog meetings on Health and Nutrition.

6. Youth and life Skills

Our mission is to develop sustainable communities that take care of their own children and have children/youths that are empowered to take charge of their lives.

It is important to empower youths with relevant skills to the ever changing world dynamics. At ZiMwana we are cognisant of the challenges youths have in accessing the opportunities that enables them to acquire relevant skills. We have partnered with government training institutions for youths to get technical skills. It is also important to empower the caregivers to improve income at household level.

The objective of skills training is to:

  • empower youths with practical skills which they can immediately use to generate income;
  • rescue youths from drug and alcohol abuse,
  • strengthen the economic status of caregivers through income generating projects;
  • training and networking programs to care givers;
  • promoting environmental justice in communities and partnering companies and institutions in corporate social responsibilities activities in communities

7. ADVOCACY

Lack of knowledge or exposure on children and human rights in communities makes it very critical to embark on advocacy. Successful advocacy programs need the involvement of the community, especially mobilizing women and girls to know their rights.

Empowering women reduces child marriages, teen marriages, domestic violence and rape in communities. Information dissemination is very critical.

How we do it:

  • Helping the community to understand that child marriage is not solution to poverty alleviation. Helping them to develop activities that generate income, through trainings and seed capitals.
  • Empowering girls to know their rights through education, social clubs, mentoring and sports.
  • Encouraging parents to treat boys and girls equally and emphasizing the role they have to play in instilling values that reject child marriage.
  • Community dialog meetings.
